Preaching the Gospel of the Grace of God
the Calling of the Apostle Paul

Now I go bound in the Spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains and tribulations await me.

Acts 20:22-23

As Paul travels around Malta and teaches believers, he receives the calling of God to return to Jerusalem. Paul testifies that the Holy Spirit arrested him, bound him, that is drawing him to Jerusalem. He adds that the Holy Spirit also speaks to him about chains and sorrows that await Paul in Jerusalem, yet he doesn’t change his mind or direction. As he departs Malta, he shares what is on his heart with the brethren in Malta:

But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

Acts 20:24

Paul is aware that he will be facing imminent death upon his return to Jerusalem, but he holds nothing as dear to him as fulfilling his calling and God-given ministry, not even his own life. I pray that God will give us the same dedication, commitment, and devotion as the one Paul had, that nothing will be more dear to us than Jesus and His calling for us — not even our lives.
