Chesed (חֶסֶד): The Hebrew Word That Feels Like a Hug

Hebrew Word of the Week
Chesed (חֶסֶד): The Hebrew Word That Feels Like a Hug

There’s this beautiful Hebrew word that shows up all over the Bible. You might have heard it before—Chesed (pronounced: KHEH-sed)).  It’s what God shows us every single day.

📖 Biblical Foundation

Psalms 136 repeats this word over and over again, like a heartbeat: “His chesed endures forever.” That means God’s love isn’t based on how well we’re doing, or whether we got everything right today. His chesed is steady. Patient. Strong. It keeps coming—even when we mess up.

🕊 What Chesed Really Means

Chesed is one of those Hebrew words that doesn’t really translate well. People try with “lovingkindness,” “mercy,” or “steadfast love,” but honestly…chesed is bigger than all of those. It’s that kind of love that sticks around – even when it’s hard or even when it costs something. It’s love that doesn’t give up on you.

✝️ Chesed – Love In Action

Micah says:

“Do justice. Love chesed. Walk humbly with God.”

Micah 6:8

It’s not about being perfect—it’s about living with open hearts. Chesed isn’t always easy. Sometimes we don’t feel like showing up with love. Sometimes it feels easier to look away, to judge, or to protect ourselves.

However, Yeshua showed us what true chesed looks like, all the way to the cross. He loved us even when it hurt and even when we didn’t deserve it. That’s chesed—love in action.

🌟 What Does This Mean for You?

What does chesed mean for you right now? It means loving that difficult person. It means forgiving when it still stings. It means giving someone your time, your smile, your kindness—even when your schedules are full. It means letting God’s love flow through you.

🙏 A Simple Prayer:

God, thank You for Your “chesed.” Thank You for never giving up on me. Fill me with that same love and help me share it with the people around me. Even when it’s hard. Even when I’m tired. Let my life reflect Your kindness. Amen.
