Hebrew Word of the Week —
Sela (סֶלַע) —
A Rock That Cannot Be Moved

Stability is something we often do not think about until it is tested. When things feel uncertain or unsettled, the question becomes clear: what can we truly rely on? What will remain steady when everything else feels like it is shifting?

The Hebrew Bible gives us a word that speaks directly into this reality: Sela (סֶלַע, SEH-lah). Sela means rock — not a small stone, but a large, solid, immovable rock or cliff. It represents strength, stability, and a place of security. In Scripture, this word is often used to describe God Himself as the One who remains steady when everything else shifts.

David writes,

“The Lord is my rock (sela) and my fortress and my deliverer”

Psalm 18:2

He did not write these words in a calm season, but in a time of danger, pressure, and uncertainty. Yet his conclusion was clear: his security was not found in his circumstances, but in God. God was his Sela.

This helps us understand an important truth. Biblical stability does not come from a life without difficulty — it comes from being anchored in God.

When we come to the New Testament, Yeshua builds on this same idea and makes it practical:

“Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock”

Matthew 7:24

Yeshua does not promise that storms will not come. He makes it clear that they will. The difference is not in the conditions, but in the foundation. A life built on Him stands.

To build on the rock means taking His words seriously, trusting His leadership, and choosing obedience even when it is not easy. It means remaining anchored when everything else feels unstable.

For believers today, this message is very real. Many here in Israel — and many around the world — are living with tension, uncertainty, and difficult questions. In such a season, the need for something firm is deeply personal. The word Sela reminds us that our stability is not found in circumstances, systems, or what we can control, but in God Himself.

Through Yeshua, we are given a foundation that cannot be shaken.

This week, let this truth settle in your heart: Sela — A Rock That Cannot Be Moved. Build your life on Him, return to Him when you feel unsettled, and stand on what does not change.

Prayer

Lord Yeshua, You are my rock and my foundation. When everything around me feels uncertain, keep my heart steady in Your truth. Teach me to trust You, follow You, and remain anchored in You in every season. Amen.

With love and blessings,
