Have you ever thought about the manna God sent to feed the Israelites? Imagine wandering the desert for 40 years, sustained by a mysterious bread that rained from heaven. Each morning, you would wake up surrounded by this beautiful bread that supplied all your body needed in order to live. However, what if this manna wasn’t just meant as nourishment but a glimpse into an even better future provision from God?
MANNA OF OLD To understand manna, we must return to the Old Testament book of Exodus. Approximately two months after the Israelites departed Egypt, their food stores began running low. God told Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you…” (Exodus 16:4). The word for “bread” in this context describes a heavenly provision of supernatural food like bread. When that “manna” first appeared on the ground, no one knew what it was, how it originated, or how God provided it. The Hebrew word “manna” actually means “what is it.” God had graciously provided a supernatural substance that had the ability to meet whatever need was present. With it, He fed a population of over 1,000,000 people for over 40 years.
THE NEW MANNA In John 6, we see another incredible miracle of the Lord feeding multitudes. Over 5,000 (including women and children; this number could be well over 15,000) people were fed with just five loaves of bread and two fish. This supernatural event showcased the power the Father had given to the Son by providing sustenance beyond what seemed possible. When the people later came back, they asked Jesus for more miracles, pointing to the miracle of manna in the time of Moses.
