Yeshua then used the elements of the Seder meal to demonstrate the trial He was facing. As He broke the bread that represented His body, He instructed His disciples to remember Him each time they partook of this meal. He then raised the cup of wine that represented the blood He would pour out as He was nailed to the cross and with this, He announced He would be betrayed by one of those seated around the table. When questioned who would do such a thing, Yeshua dipped the bread in the paste of bitter herbs, handing it to Judas, thus revealing His betrayer. BITTER TEARS One final component of the Seder meal is salt water. Traditionally, it was to represent the bitter tears of the Hebrew slaves who were forced to labor under brutal conditions by the Egyptians. The people were to dip the bread into the salt water to remind them of God’s faithfulness to see their tears and deliver them from their bondage. In this last supper, the salt water became the tears that would soon be shed for us in the Garden as Jesus agonized over the task set before Him. As He shed His last tear on that Cross, He cried out, “It is finished,” and a new covenant was born. THE NEW COVENANT The Seder meal ends with songs of praise from Psalms 112-116. What had begun in bitterness has been reborn into joy! Through our Passover Lamb, Yeshua Hamashiach, we too, have been delivered. We are free of the bondage that once was a curse unto death.
