VOJI Discipleship is How Legacy Lives On —
Honoring a Friend, Mentoring a Generation

“One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts.”

Psalm 145:4

God often uses friendships to shape our lives in ways we could never anticipate. They strengthen our faith, refine our character, and leave a lasting imprint that continues long after circumstances have changed. For Guy Pochtar, Pastor Israel’s youngest son, one of those friendships was with David Ratner.

The two were raised together at Beit Hallel Congregation in Ashdod. They spent their childhood serving, worshipping, learning, and growing in the Lord alongside one another. As the years passed, their friendship deepened into the kind of brotherhood that is forged through shared faith, faithful families, and countless ordinary moments that later become priceless memories.

Then everything changed on October 7, 2023.

When Israel came under attack, David was among those who answered the call to defend the nation. During the fighting, he courageously gave his life while helping rescue others. His bravery saved lives, but his loss was deeply felt by everyone who knew him—his parents, his younger brothers and sister, close friends, and the Beit Hallel family who had watched him grow from a boy into a man of God.

Yet throughout Scripture we are reminded that God has a remarkable way of bringing new life out of seasons marked by sorrow.

Today, Guy serves as one of the youth pastors at Beit Hallel Congregation. Each week he gathers with a group of young men who are entering one of the most significant chapters of their lives. Some will soon begin serving in the Israel Defense Forces, while others have already put on the uniform. Together they study the Bible, pray, challenge one another, ask honest questions, and build friendships centered on Yeshua that will sustain them for years to come.

Among those sitting around the table each week are David’s three younger brothers.

As they prepare to step into adulthood and military service one day in the future, they continue to carry the example their older brother left behind. His faith, courage, and willingness to sacrifice for others still speak into their lives. There is something deeply moving about seeing them discipled by someone who not only loved David as a friend but now walks beside those David loved most. In God’s gracious plan, a lifelong friendship has become an enduring ministry of hope and encouragement.

For Guy, this ministry extends far beyond leading a weekly home group. It is a calling to invest in the next generation—to serve as a mentor, an older brother, and a faithful shepherd during a season when these young men will face decisions and challenges that will shape the rest of their lives. Week after week he opens the Scriptures with them, prays over them, listens carefully, and encourages them to remain firmly rooted in Yeshua wherever God leads them.

Perhaps this is one of the clearest pictures of how a godly legacy continues.

Guy honors David not only by remembering the remarkable young man he was, but by pouring into the lives of those David cherished most. In doing so, he is helping pass on the same qualities that defined David’s life—steadfast faith, sacrificial love, humble service, and wholehearted devotion to God. Those same values are now being planted in the hearts of another generation.

This is the beauty of discipleship. It is not simply about teaching biblical truth; it is about walking together through life. It is one generation strengthening the next, older believers investing in younger believers, and faith being passed from one life to another. As Paul reminded Timothy,

“What you have heard from me… entrust to faithful people who will also be qualified to teach others”

2 Timothy 2:2

That pattern continues to shape lives in Israel today.

Looking at these young men, it is impossible not to think about what lies ahead. They are future husbands and fathers, pastors, ministry leaders, educators, entrepreneurs, professionals, soldiers, and faithful ambassadors for Yeshua throughout Israel. The time they spend around God’s Word today will influence families, congregations, workplaces, and communities for decades to come.
