A Family Returning:
And a Messiah Waiting in Jerusalem

On Mount Zion in Jerusalem, Alyona began to cry. She had been listening as one of our team members spoke about the grace of God and shared how Yeshua had changed his own life. Then the group opened Isaiah 53 and began reading together. Alyona had come to Jerusalem as a visitor, expecting to see the city and spend time with her parents. She had not expected to find herself standing in the city of the prophets, considering whether the Messiah they were speaking about could become her Messiah too.

Only three months earlier, her parents, Valeri and Tamara, had made aliyah and begun a new life in Israel.

Like so many Jewish families returning to the Land, they arrived with all the practical challenges of beginning again. Yet within weeks, another journey had begun. Through relationships with local believers, they heard about Yeshua, opened their hearts to Him and began becoming part of a community of faith. Their daughter knew that Israel was changing their lives. She did not yet know how much it was about to change hers.

Alyona had never been to Israel before, and not everyone encouraged her to come. She heard warnings about the dangers and difficulties of life here, yet something kept drawing her. In fact, while sitting on the airplane to Israel, one unexpected word came strongly into her heart: love. She did not know what it meant or why it was there. She simply carried it with her when she landed.

During her visit, Alyona joined her parents and our team for a day in Jerusalem.

They walked through the Old City, talked about the Bible and gradually moved from discussing the history around them to the much more personal question of faith. By the time they reached Mount Zion, the conversation had turned to God’s grace and Yeshua. Then they opened Isaiah 53. As Alyona listened, what had begun as a conversation became deeply personal. Tears came to her eyes, and when she was asked whether she wanted to pray and open her heart to Yeshua, she said yes.

Mother, father and daughter joined hands and prayed together. Valeri and Tamara had returned to the land of their ancestors only months earlier and encountered Yeshua here. Now they were watching their daughter come to faith in Jerusalem. All three wept as they embraced one another. In the middle of that moment, Alyona thanked her father for refusing to listen to those who had tried to discourage him from moving to Israel. Others had discouraged her from coming too, but now she understood that strange sense she had carried on the airplane that something good was waiting for her here.

Then she said something no one expected: “Now I understand that my home is here too. I will come back to live here.”

For believers in the nations who have prayed for the Jewish people and for the salvation of Israel, it is easy to speak about aliyah in large terms—the return of a people to their ancient homeland. But sometimes God allows us to see that story through one family. A father and mother return to Israel and encounter Yeshua. Their daughter comes simply to visit them, finds herself standing in Jerusalem reading Isaiah, and opens her own heart to the Messiah of Israel. Suddenly, the great themes we speak about—Israel, restoration, Messiah and salvation—have names and faces.

Before returning home, Alyona joined gatherings of believers in both Jerusalem and Ashdod. She had arrived in Israel as the daughter of two new immigrants, coming to see the life they were building. She left as a new believer herself, already speaking about the day she would return. There is still much ahead for this family. Faith must grow, relationships must deepen, and Alyona has her own journey before her. But their story reminds us why the patient, personal work of sharing Yeshua in Israel matters. Often we meet someone without knowing what God has already begun doing in their heart.

For Alyona, it began before she even landed in Israel with one unexpected word: love. In Jerusalem, as she heard about the grace of God and opened the words of Isaiah 53, she discovered where that love was leading her—to Yeshua.
