A Hike That Transformed Lives

What started as a simple Saturday hike turned into something far greater—an unexpected outpouring of living water for those hearing the Gospel for the very first time. For some, it became a turning point, drawing them closer to the true Source of life.

“Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John 4:14

A Hike with a Higher Purpose

Led by one of our ministry leaders, Sergey, a group of about 50 people—believers and seekers alike—set out on a scenic trail near Jerusalem. Each participant had previously connected with our ministry through various outreach efforts, and this hike was designed to do more than explore nature. It was an invitation to encounter the God who created it.

As they walked, Sergey prayed silently, “Lord, give me the right words at the right moment.” What followed was nothing short of a divine appointment.

A Hidden Spring, a Holy Moment

Toward the end of the trail, the group stumbled upon a spring tucked away inside a small cave—often used by observant Jews as a mikveh, or ritual bath, especially during the High Holidays. The timing couldn’t have been more fitting. It was just two days after Yom Kippur.

Their tour guide, a non-believer, explained how people from nearby, even from a hospital, would come to immerse themselves in the spring, hoping for physical and spiritual healing. He even remarked on wheelchairs mysteriously left behind, hinting at possible miracles.

Sensing the moment was right, Sergey opened his Bible to John 5—the story of Yeshua healing the man at the pool of Bethesda. He read aloud:

“When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, He asked him, ‘Do you want to get well?’ … Then Jesus said to him, ‘Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.’”

John 5:6, 8

Hearts Open to the Living Word

At first, only a few listened. But soon, every unbeliever in the group had gathered close, drawn by something deeper than curiosity. Sergey gently explained that it wasn’t the water in the spring that healed—it was the Living Word, Yeshua Himself. The same Messiah who walked the land of Israel still heals and transforms lives today.

The tour guide, visibly moved, asked about the Jewish feast mentioned at the beginning of John 5. That simple question opened the door to share how every biblical feast points to God’s redemptive plan and His desire to dwell with His people.

Seeing the Bible Come to Life

In Israel, many people remain unbelievers simply because no one has ever taken the time to explain the Gospel to them in a meaningful way. That’s why our ministry leads so many seekers to biblical sites—so they can see where the Word took place and hear it for the first time in context.

After this powerful encounter, most of the unbelievers from the hike began attending our ministry’s services, their hearts stirred and their eyes opened.
