We’ve just stepped into a very special time on God’s calendar—the new month of Elul (אֱלוּל). Elul is not just another month on the calendar. It’s the season that leads up to two of the most significant days in the biblical year: Rosh Hashanah (Feast of Trumpets), and Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). Rosh Hashanah reminds us of God’s kingship, calling us to reflect on the past year, to think about how we have walked, and to prepare our hearts for what lies ahead. Yom Kippur calls us even deeper—it’s a time of cleansing, repentance, and intimate reflection before the Lord. You can actually feel the atmosphere shift in Israel during this season. People pray more, read the Scriptures, visit synagogues, and open their hearts in ways that are truly inspiring.
Just like the new moon marks a fresh beginning in the sky, God offers fresh beginnings for our hearts too. The prophet Malachi speaks God’s invitation clearly: “Return to Me, and I will return to you” (Malachi 3:7). In Hebrew this is read as “shuvu elai ve-shuvu eleichem.” This is the heart of Elul. It’s not about trying harder or being perfect. It’s about turning back to God, letting Him meet us where we are, and opening our hearts to His love and guidance.
The real beauty of this season is that it reminds us we are never alone in our journey. God is always reaching out to us, inviting us to return, and giving us opportunities to start anew. Elul is God’s invitation to open our hearts wider, to let Him shape us, and to walk with Him more closely than ever. It’s a time to reconnect with God daily, to spend a few extra minutes reading His Word, to write down prayers, or simply to sit in silence and let Him speak. It’s also a season to think about others—to ask God how we can show His love in practical ways, whether through encouraging words, acts of kindness, or simply being present for someone who needs us.
Elul is a season of mercy, of hope, and of fresh starts. Let’s embrace it fully, trusting that God is at work in us, shaping our hearts, and inviting us into a deeper, more intimate walk with Him. As we move through this month, let’s lean in. Let’s let God cleanse and guide our hearts. Let’s listen for His voice in prayer and reflection and prepare for the joy and hope of the feasts ahead. As believers in Yeshua, it’s also a time to for us to rejoice. Our Messiah has already made the way for forgiveness and cleansing. We don’t need to earn it—we simply receive it.
