What does it really mean when Scripture tells us to “choose life”?
In Parashat Nitzavim–Vayelech (Deuteronomy 29:9–31:30), Israel stands at a turning point.
Moses is nearing the end of his leadership. Joshua will soon lead a new generation into the Promised Land. And before Israel moves forward, Moses calls the people to renew their commitment to God.
Then he places a remarkable choice before them:
“I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life…” — Deuteronomy 30:19
In this Torah teaching from Israel, Pastor Israel Pochtar explores:
What it means to stand together before God Why Scripture continually calls us to return to the Lord The Hebrew meaning of Teshuvah — repentance and return What Moses meant by “choose life” Why God says His Word is not beyond our reach How Joshua could face a new season with courage Why God’s truth must be passed faithfully from one generation to the next
One of the central Hebrew words in this portion is Chaim (חַיִּים) — life.
For Moses, choosing life was not simply about physical survival. Israel was being called to love God, listen to His voice, remain close to Him, and walk faithfully in His ways.
Centuries later, Yeshua spoke about life in a profound way:
“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” — John 10:10
There is another powerful message in Nitzavim–Vayelech: we can move forward because God goes with us.
Moses would not enter the land with Israel. Joshua was stepping into an enormous responsibility. A generation was facing a future they had never experienced before.
Yet Moses told them:
“Be strong and courageous… for the LORD your God goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” — Deuteronomy 31:6
Maybe you are facing a transition of your own. Perhaps something familiar is ending, something new is beginning, or you simply do not know what lies ahead.
Our confidence does not have to rest in knowing everything about the road ahead.
It can rest in knowing Who goes with us.
