The recent news of the campus riots, protests, and blatant antisemitic attacks leave many of us shaking our heads in disbelief. Is this really happening in America? How can this country, founded on Christian values, be allowing this to happen today? But the real question on most people’s minds is, why should we care? Owing a Debt “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.” Romans 1:16 The Christian faith has been brought to us because of the endurance of the Jewish people. It is only through what Jesus did and His disciple’s faithfulness that we have our salvation. Jesus was a Jew, plain and simple. He came to set His people free, the Jewish people, but the plan was to set all of us free. He lived the Jewish life, He worshiped in Jewish temples, and He participated in all the Jewish feasts. Every disciple He chose was Jewish, including Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles. The mission was to spread the Gospel message to the Jews first and then to the Gentiles. A mission each one of them eagerly embraced to bring us this message of hope, even at the cost of their own lives. We owe a tremendous debt to the Jewish people for Jesus; the gift that gave us life.
