Ohr (אוֹר) — Light That Shines Through the Darkness!

Hebrew Word of the Week
Ohr (אוֹר): Light That Shines Through the Darkness!

There’s a beautiful Hebrew word that shows up all over the Bible—short, simple, but packed with meaning. It’s Ohr (pronounced “or”) and it means light. We are not just talking about ordinary sunlight or a lamp in a dark room. In Scripture, it represents truth, hope, clarity, and the presence of God Himself.

📖 Biblical Foundation

It’s what shattered the darkness at the very beginning when God said, “Let there be light” (Genesis 1:3). And ever since, God’s light has been at the center of His plan to rescue and restore this world.

King David captured this beautifully in Psalm 27:1: “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?”

☀️God is Light

God’s light isn’t distant or abstract. It’s personal. It reaches into our confusion, fear, and pain—and brings peace. His Ohr guides us, protects us, strengthens us, and reminds us that we’re never alone.

But, let’s be honest. Life isn’t always bright and easy. Sometimes things feel dark—on the outside and the inside. War, loss, uncertainty, division… it all tries to cloud our hearts. And in those moments, it can feel hard to even remember the light, let alone shine it. However, it has been placed inside us by Yeshua and nothing can take it away.

🕊 You are the Light

“You are the light of the world.”

Matthew 5:14

Yeshua did not say you might be or try to be the light in this verse. He said you are! That’s who we become when His Spirit lives in us. We don’t have to create the light ourselves—we just reflect what He’s already put inside us.

Being the light isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about showing up with love, kindness, courage and the truth. It’s choosing to let our light shine, even in the difficult times, and refusing to let darkness win. Instead, we overcome the darkness. As John says:

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

John 1:5

🌟 What Does This Mean for You?

What does Ohr mean for you? It means that even in your everyday life—in your home, your work, your neighborhood—you carry something powerful. Your prayers push back the dark. Your smile matters. Your faith, even when it feels small, makes a difference. You might be the only light someone sees today so let it shine brightly for all to see who you are and to whom you belong. His light is in you!

🙏 A Simple Prayer:

A Simple Prayer:

Lord, thank You for being my Light. Fill me with Your Ohr and help me reflect it everywhere I go. Teach me to love like You, to bring hope where there’s fear, and to speak truth with gentleness. Let my life shine with Your light. Amen.

👑 Blessings

This week, let’s live out Ohr. Let’s forgive quicker, speak more gently, encourage someone who’s hurting, give even when it’s hard. Let’s choose joy even when our life’s a chaotic mess because Ohr isn’t just something we receive from God. It’s something we’re called to pass on.

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.”

Isaiah 60:1
