The Hebrew word Shamar (שָׁמַר, shah-MAHR) is a word full of tenderness. It means to keep, to guard, to watch over, to treasure. From this root also comes the word Shomer (שׁוֹמֵר), which means keeper, guardian. Together they give us a beautiful picture of God: not only is He strong enough to protect us, but He treasures us so much that He chooses to.
Think of a parent watching over their sleeping child. They don’t sit nearby out of duty, but out of love. Their eyes are fixed on the child with affection, ready to protect, comfort, and keep them safe. That is the picture of Shamar. God doesn’t guard us at a distance. He watches over us closely, with love in His heart and our names on His lips.

Wherever you go, whatever you face, you are being watched over, guarded, and treasured. “The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.” (Psalm 121:8).
