We live in a world where so much can change without warning. Plans change, circumstances change, people change, and sometimes things we thought were secure suddenly become uncertain. When that happens, our attention naturally goes to the problem in front of us.
We want to know what will happen, how God will answer, and what we should do next.
But throughout the book of Isaiah, God repeatedly brings His people back to something even more important. Before answering every question about what lies ahead, He reminds them of who He is.
Ani Hu (אֲנִי הוּא, pronounced: ah-NEE hoo) means “I am He.” It is a simple Hebrew expression, but when God speaks these words through Isaiah, they carry tremendous weight. Kingdoms rise and fall. Generations come and go. Circumstances change. But God remains the same. In Isaiah 43:10, the Lord tells Israel that He has chosen them as His witnesses so that they may know Him, believe Him, and understand this truth: Ani Hu—I am He.

Israel had already seen God do extraordinary things. He had delivered His people from Egypt, opened the sea before them, provided for them in the wilderness, and remained faithful through generation after generation. Yet now they were facing new enemies, new fears, and an uncertain future. God’s answer was to remind them that the One they needed for what was ahead was the same God who had carried them through everything behind them.
We need this reminder just as much today.
When circumstances change, we can begin wondering whether God will still be faithful in this situation. We remember what He did before, but somehow the problem standing in front of us feels different. Yet God’s faithfulness does not belong only to yesterday. The God who carried you then is still God today.
We see this again in Isaiah 46:4, where God speaks about carrying His people even into old age. The years will pass and life will change, but He will continue to sustain, carry, and rescue them.

Notice the assurance behind this promise: Ani Hu—I am He. God does not promise that everything around us will remain the same. He reminds us that He will. We may enter a season we have never experienced before, but God has not suddenly become someone different.
And when we come to the words of Yeshua, Ani Hu takes on even greater significance. In John 8, Yeshua is speaking about who He is and why His listeners must believe in Him. When we read His words in Hebrew, we encounter this striking statement:
אִם לֹא תַאֲמִינוּ כִּי אֲנִי הוּא
Im lo ta’aminu ki Ani Hu
“If you do not believe that I am He…”
John 8:24
Those final two words stand out: Ani Hu. They are deeply familiar from Isaiah, where the God of Israel declares His identity to His people. Then, only a few verses later, Yeshua says:
אָז תֵּדעוּ כִּי אֲנִי הוּא
Az ted’u ki Ani Hu
“Then you will know that I am He.”
John 8:28
For someone familiar with the Hebrew Scriptures, this is a remarkable connection. Through Isaiah, God had called His people to know, believe, and understand that Ani Hu. Now Yeshua is calling His listeners to recognize who is standing before them.
Throughout John’s Gospel, Yeshua continues revealing who He is. He is the Bread of Life, the Light of the World, the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection and the Life, and the Way, the Truth, and the Life. These are not simply descriptions of what Yeshua can give us. They reveal who He is.
This is where Ani Hu becomes something we can carry into our own lives. Our faith is not built upon knowing what will happen tomorrow. It is built upon knowing the One in whom we have placed our trust. When the road becomes dark, Yeshua is still the Light. When we do not know where to go, He is still the Good Shepherd. When something seems beyond hope, He is still the Resurrection and the Life.
Circumstances change. He does not.
Whatever changes around you this week, remember these two simple Hebrew words: Ani Hu. You may not know what tomorrow will bring or exactly how God will answer, but you can know the One who holds tomorrow. The God who was faithful before has not changed, and He will remain faithful.

“Lord, You are the same God who has carried Your people from generation to generation. When circumstances around me change, help me remember that You have not changed. Teach me to trust who You are even when I cannot see what You are doing. Thank You for revealing Yourself to us through Yeshua and for remaining faithful in every season. May my confidence rest not in what I can see, but in who You are. Amen.”
