Torah Reading with Pastor Israel: Week 14 (Parashat Va’era)

In this Torah reading, Parashat Va’era (Exodus 6:2–9:35), we explore how God reveals Himself not merely by name, but through redemptive action. God introduces His covenant Name as Israel comes to know Him personally as Go’el — Redeemer. From Moses and Aaron standing before Pharaoh, to the signs and wonders that confront Egypt’s false gods, this portion reveals God’s power, faithfulness, and supremacy over all creation. The plagues are not random acts of judgment, but divine otot u’moftetim (signs and wonders) pointing to redemption and calling hearts to repentance.
This teaching also highlights the struggle of emunah (faith)—both Israel’s difficulty believing after long disappointment and Pharaoh’s hardened resistance. We see how God makes a clear distinction between Egypt and Israel, protecting His people and marking them as His covenant possession. Through a Messianic lens, the redemption in Exodus points forward to Yeshua, our ultimate Go’el, whose miracles and sacrifice bring deliverance and new life. Va’era calls us to deeper faith, covenant identity, and holiness—knowing God not only by belief, but by experience.
