In the United States, the idea of a bomb shelter may feel distant. For many, it’s a relic of the Cold War. But in Israel, this concept takes on a different urgency. With ongoing regional conflicts, bomb shelters are essential to safety. When moving and deciding where to live or for families out and about enjoying children’s activities, the proximity of the nearest shelter is always at the forefront. If, or more accurately when, the dreaded sirens alert of an attack, Israelis have about 30 seconds to get to the nearest one to ensure their safety. The importance of a secure place is significant. Furthermore, when the space is incapacitated, the priority of restoration goes nearly to the top of the list especially with war escalating.
Phase One At VOJI’s Beit Hallel Ashdod bomb shelter, this is where we are at. We recently announced the dismal condition of the current deteriorating space and the need to revive it. We are so very grateful that you have answered this call and have given enough to start this endeavor. Your provision has covered the expenses of phase one of this renovation. This first phase includes flooring, reinforcing walls, updating electrical systems, lighting and refurbishing the space. This will get the bones of this place in place for the next step.
The ultimate goal, however, is not to just have a basic, functional bomb shelter. This has become such a cornerstone for the community.
