Passover and the Last Supper – two seemingly different ceremonies that, when woven together, form an intricate and complex story of God’s faithful love and mercy. Although set over 500 years apart, the similarities are astounding as we witness how God’s original plan to set the Hebrew captives free became the plan to set ALL of mankind free.

The traditional Seder meal eaten at Passover by the Israelites was rich in symbolism. Each element was partaken in remembrance of their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. God did not want them ever to forget what He did and what it cost. The price of their freedom was paid in blood—the blood of the firstborn and the blood of the lamb.

The Cup and the Bread
However, the symbolism of the unleavened bread should not be overlooked in this powerful story of redemption. Unleavened bread, or the “bread of affliction,” was also a remembrance symbol of the Jew’s deliverance.

Jesus held this very bread in His hand as He spoke to the disciples and said, ” This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”  He then took the cup of wine and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” In these two statements, Jesus declared, “I have fulfilled the old covenant. I am the final sacrifice for your delivery from the slavery of sin. You have been redeemed!”

Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover (Pesach) lamb, has been sacrificed. 1 Corinthians 5:7

A New Passover Celebration
The next time you take the cup and the bread in remembrance of the Lord’s sacrifice, take a moment and reflect on this intriguing connection between the first Passover and the Lord’s Supper. In His sacrifice, Jesus became the unleavened bread. He was without sin (leaven), the bread of affliction to atone for our sins. He is the Passover Lamb whose blood washes us clean. He is the new covenant, and all who believe in His atoning will be saved.

“Do not eat bread with yeast, but for seven days eat unleavened bread, the bread of affliction because you left Egypt in haste—so that all the days of your life you might remember the time of your departure from Egypt.” Deuteronomy 16:3

Sharing the Good News
VOJI is passionate about sharing this story with our Jewish brothers and sisters in Israel. We have an evangelism event scheduled this weekend in the Galilee region where we will share this Good News with over 300 nonbelieving Jews. Will you partner with us to help them hear this wonderful story of love and redemption? With your support, we can introduce them to the Lamb, who can save them today. We need your help and prayers to be the effective witnesses we are called to be. Send your gift today to help sponsor this life-giving event!
