Persecution… what does that word mean to you? Many think they know what it is like to be persecuted. Sometimes, we get attacked for a post on social media about God’s love or receive backlash when we witness to unbelievers. Some of us even have family members who have alienated us for professing our faith. But is that truly persecution? What if you were no longer allowed to hear the Gospel message? What if your family was targeted by hateful rhetoric and possible violence? Would you have the faith and courage to continue, no matter the cost?
The Vision
Years ago, on a journey from his home in Tel Aviv to visit friends in Ashdod, Pastor Israel was given a vision from The Lord. In this vision, he saw thousands of Jewish people worshipping Yeshua in the city of Ashdod. Acting upon this visionary promise of God, he sold everything to move to Ashdod. There he began to build the first Messianic Hebrew church in a city of over 400 orthodox synagogues. He knew it would be an uphill battle, but he stood on the promise of God’s vision to bring salvation to the Jews.
The Beit Hallel Congregation in Ashdod has always faced challenges, obstacles, and opposition. Over the years, the church has been constantly persecuted by the Orthodox Jews in the form of witchcraft, curses, and intimidation. They once faced a historic protest where over 3000 Jewish Orthodox protestors gathered outside the church building in an attempt to push them out of the city. Pastor Israel, his team, and members of the congregation have endured various degrees of personal attacks as well, including smear campaigns, intimidation, and continual harassment. However, they have also seen miraculous breakthroughs, divine opportunities, victories, and growth.
Despite what was thrown at them, the Beit Hallel congregation continued to grow and thrive, opening several satellite churches across the region in the process. When permission was finally received last year to open the building for gatherings, it seemed God was giving us the victory.
