What does God look for in a leader?
Long before leadership became a subject of books, conferences, and seminars, Scripture gave us a remarkably clear picture: pursue justice, reject corruption, remain humble, stay grounded in God’s Word, and listen carefully to His voice.
In this week’s Torah reading from Deuteronomy 16:18–21:9, Moses prepares Israel for life in the Promised Land by giving instructions for judges, kings, priests, and prophets.
But these instructions are about much more than ancient government. They reveal principles of godly character that still speak powerfully to us today.
One of the most significant passages also points forward. Moses tells Israel that God would raise up a Prophet like him, and that the people should listen to Him. The New Testament later connects this promise directly to Jesus.
In this teaching from Israel, Pastor Israel Pochtar explores: • Why God cares deeply about justice and integrity.
• What Scripture teaches about godly leadership.
• Why Israel’s kings were commanded to remain humble and grounded in God’s Word.
• The remarkable promise of a Prophet like Moses.
• How this prophecy points us toward Jesus.
• What the cities of refuge reveal about justice and mercy.
• Why we can face difficult circumstances without fear when God is with us.
Godly leadership begins long before someone receives a title. It begins with character—with people who seek what is right, walk humbly before God, listen to His Word, and serve others faithfully.
These principles mattered in ancient Israel, and they still matter for every follower of Jesus today.
