During these days of Rosh HaShanah, an ancient sound is once again being heard throughout Israel. In synagogues and communities across the country, the shofar sounds as the Jewish people observe what Scripture calls Yom Teruah—the Day of the Shofar Blast.
For those of us listening from thousands of miles away, it can seem like a sound belonging to another place and another people. Yet when we open the Scriptures, we discover that the message carried by the shofar reaches much further. It speaks to every believer who has learned to trust the God of Israel and is waiting for the fulfillment of His promises.
Throughout the Bible, the shofar is never merely background sound. It announces, awakens, gathers, warns, and calls people to attention. Scripture even uses the Hebrew expression kol shofar—the voice of the shofar. It is a beautiful picture because the sound itself seems to interrupt everything else and say: Listen. Pay attention. Remember.
Perhaps that is one reason its message feels so relevant today.
Our lives are surrounded by voices competing for our attention. News, responsibilities, decisions, worries, expectations, and the constant noise of everyday life can become so loud that we forget how important it is simply to turn our hearts toward God and listen.
The shofar reminds us that the God who spoke to Abraham, Moses, and the prophets has not become silent. We see that most clearly in Yeshua. God did not remain distant from us; He sent His Son, and through Yeshua the heart of the Father was revealed. He is still able to guide His children, correct us, encourage us, and direct our steps.
But the biblical message of the shofar reaches in more than one direction. It calls us to remember what God has already done, but it also points toward something still ahead.
Yeshua spoke of the day when
“He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds.”
Matthew 24:31
Paul gives us another extraordinary picture:
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God.”
1 Thessalonians 4:16
Think about that for a moment. The ancient sound being heard in Israel during these biblical Feasts points us toward a promise that believers around the world are still waiting to see fulfilled. The shofar takes our eyes backward to the faithfulness of God, brings our attention back to His voice in the present, and then turns our eyes forward toward the return of Yeshua our Messiah.
Remember. Listen. Look forward.
Remember the God who has been faithful through every generation. Listen to the God who still speaks today. And look forward with confidence to the return of the Messiah and the fulfillment of everything He has promised.
That future hope is not meant to make us passive. If we truly believe Yeshua is returning, then the way we live today matters. We want our hearts awake, our ears attentive to His voice, and our lives aligned with His purposes. We want to love people well, share the Good News faithfully, stand with Israel in prayer, and be found serving the Lord when He comes.
This is one of the beautiful things about walking together with our friends and ministry partners in Israel.
While the shofar is physically sounding there, its biblical message can reach us here. The same Scriptures are open before us. The same God is faithful. The same Messiah is our hope.
So during this season of the Fall Feasts, as the sound of the shofar rises across Israel, allow its message to reach your heart wherever you are.
One ancient sound carries all three: the faithfulness of God behind us, the voice of God with us, and the promise of Yeshua before us.
The shofar is sounding in Israel. May our hearts be listening.
